What in Ādaži is connected to the heating network and what is not

The centre of Ādaži gets its heat from the boiler house at Attekas iela 43, which runs a wood chip boiler and gas boilers. A Riga Technical University study for the municipality (2023) states that apart from apartment buildings only four other consumers in the centre of Ādaži are connected to the heating network: one private house, the hospital and two municipal buildings. Hot water in the centre is not supplied centrally; residents heat it with electricity.

Kadaga has one boiler house with gas boilers, where pellet boilers have also been installed since 2022. In Carnikava the same study lists 11 local gas boiler houses, six of which are connected to separate block networks. Heat in Ādaži, Kadaga and Carnikava is supplied by SIA “Ādažu Namsaimnieks”.

What does this mean for the chimney? In apartment buildings in the centre of Ādaži and in Kadaga a flat usually has no flue of its own, but it has ventilation ducts. All other houses have their own boiler or stove, so cleaning by 1 November and the certificate are up to the owner.

New builds: modular chimneys and condensing boilers

Ādaži has many new detached and terraced houses. Compared with old houses, they more often have a modular chimney with a ceramic or stainless steel inner pipe, and a gas condensing boiler with a coaxial flue through the wall. Such a flue is cleaned with a softer brush that does not scratch the pipe wall, and we check that the condensate drain is not clogged.

A lined or metal flue of a gas appliance is checked once every two years, a brick flue once a year. If the boiler in a new house is connected to an old brick chimney, moisture from the flue gases can soak the masonry. Then you need a liner: liner for a gas boiler and condensation in the chimney.

Pellet and firewood boilers: two cleanings a season

A boiler is a long-burn appliance that does not store heat for longer than three hours. So its flue is cleaned twice: by 1 November and once more between 1 November and 1 March. In a pellet boiler the ash is fine and settles in the flue pipe and the chimney base; in a firewood boiler, especially with damp wood, tar builds up on the walls.

Ādaži rules on burning and what they do not mean for a stove

The Ādaži municipality waste regulations allow you to burn dry grass, dry leaves, branches and other plant parts on a bonfire on your own property, if you keep it safe and do not disturb the neighbours. This permission applies to a bonfire, not to a stove or boiler. In a firebox, leaves, grass and damp branches burn with a small flame, the smoke cools in the chimney and the soot layer grows faster.

The municipality also has binding regulations No. 44/2024 on the development of heat supply: in the district heating zone the primary type of heating is district heating, and the zones are shown on the heat supplier's website. Fireplaces and saunas by the Gauja and the lakes

Ādaži lies between the Gauja and the lakes, surrounded by forests and lower-lying land. Many houses have a sauna in the garden or the basement, and a sauna stove is a long-burn appliance with the same two-cleaning schedule as a boiler. Roads and access in Ādaži

Ādaži is connected to Riga by the A1, and towards Kadaga and Carnikava the route depends on the Gauja bridges. The town of Ādaži and the municipality are not the same thing: coastal villages, country houses and military areas are in the same municipality, but the route to them is different.
