From a summer house area to year-round homes

The history page of the neighbourhoods portal says that the Mangaļsala parish essentially developed into a summer house area. Today there are detached houses and green residential areas, one street with four- and five-storey apartment buildings, and port land. When a summer house is rebuilt as a year-round home, the heating usually changes several times: first a small stove or cooker, later a wood or pellet boiler, sometimes a fireplace with a water heat exchanger.

On the AS “Rīgas siltums” heat supply map (data as of 01.01.2019), Mangaļsala is not coloured as a district heating zone, and on the 2025 zoning map, by our reading of the map, it is in zone III. What we check in a converted summer house

• Whether the boiler is connected to the same channel as the stove smoke. Usually each appliance needs its own flue.
• How the flue passes through the timber floor and roof: combustible materials must be at least 300 mm away.
• Whether the old chimney has a cleaning door through which soot can be removed.
• Whether a wood or pellet boiler has a liner if the flue is an old brick channel.
• Whether the sauna, if there is one in the garden, has a separate flue and whether it has been cleaned.

Sea wind, sand and the chimney head

Mangaļsala lies between the mouth of the Daugava, the sea and the coastal forests. The chimney head and cap there take more wind and sand than in the inner city. Gusts of wind can push smoke back down if the chimney is low, and a firmly fixed cap or deflector often solves this problem. A chimney must be at least 0.5 m above the roof covering; caps and deflectors are allowed.

Deadlines and Riga's rules for replacing a boiler

A solid-fuel flue must be cleaned by 1 November. A boiler and a metal stove need one more cleaning between 1 November and 1 March. The technical condition inspection is once every five years. A private house owner may clean a solid-fuel flue themselves without a certificate, but a certificate is useful as proof for the insurer.

When replacing a boiler, Riga binding regulations No. RD-24-260-sn on heat supply allow an existing appliance in a private house to be replaced with a new ecodesign appliance of up to 50 kW without changing the fuel. In zone III the regulations give priority first to zero-emission solutions or district heating, then to solid biomass, then to gas. The appliance must be registered with the Riga Energy Agency.

Getting there and the price

Narrower roads lead to Mangaļsala from the Vecāķi and Vecdaugava side, and in summer there are more visitors on the coast. In the request, write whether a car can get up to the house and whether the roof can be reached with a ladder.

If you still use the house only in summer and light the stove a few evenings a year, cleaning is easier to schedule in spring or early summer, when chimney sweeps have less work.
