The Iecava heating network and the houses outside it

District heating in the town of Iecava is now supplied by SIA “Bauskas novada komunālserviss”. The tariff includes the costs of natural gas and wood chips. In 2022, when the operator was still “Iecavas siltums”, the town had two gas boiler houses, and after a wood chip boiler house was built the gas boilers stayed in reserve; part of the heat is bought from the “Iecava Agro” cogeneration plant.

The utility company writes that any building owner, including a private individual, can request technical conditions for a connection. However, the heating network mainly serves the compact centre and the apartment buildings. In the detached-house areas and the surrounding country properties heating is up to the owners: firewood, pellet or gas boilers, masonry stoves and cookers. Iecava also has gas: Gaso lists it among the towns where it provides distribution.

Private houses: the boiler flue twice a season

In a detached house with its own boiler the main job is the boiler flue. A boiler is a long-burn appliance, so its flue is cleaned by 1 November and once more between 1 November and 1 March. In a firewood boiler run at low output with damp wood, tar builds up quickly; a pellet boiler gives fine ash that collects in the flue pipe and the chimney base.

If the house has a gas boiler, it needs annual servicing and a check. A brick flue is checked once a year, a lined or metal one once every two years. If a gas boiler is connected to an old masonry channel without a liner, condensation soaks the channel walls, and you can see it as dark patches on the chimney in the attic. Workshops, warehouses and farms

Around Iecava there are production sites, workshops, warehouses and farm buildings that may have their own boiler house or wood stove. For a business the flue cleaning certificate is always mandatory, because the exception applies only to a private-house owner who cleans the chimney themselves. Once every five years solid and liquid fuel appliances also need a technical condition inspection certificate.

What may be burned in Bauska municipality and when

The Bauska municipality waste regulations forbid burning waste, except wood waste: dry branches without leaves and untreated wood. In towns and villages these may be burned on bonfires and in burning devices between 15 September and 30 October and between 1 April and 15 May, from 8.00 to 17.00. Leaves may not be burned.

For a stove this leads to a simple piece of advice: burn only dry, untreated wood, pellets or briquettes. Offcuts of painted boards, plywood and packaging leave tar that a brush does not remove, and then you need chimney tar removal.

Apartment buildings in Iecava

In buildings on the heating network the flats usually have no flue, but they do have ventilation ducts. These are cleaned and checked once every 10 years, once every five years in rooms with a gas cooker or water heater, and a certificate is needed after each one. In Bauska municipality apartment buildings (at least four flats) can get municipal co-funding for energy efficiency, including renewing the heat source or the heat substation; the regulations do not mention chimney and ventilation work separately.
