Two Soviet-era housing estates, planned in 1965, make up much of the built-up area and have their own district heating zone. Flats there usually have no flue, but they do have ventilation ducts. In old Bolderāja and by the Buļļupe there are low-rise buildings and private houses heated by stoves and boilers. Flue cleaning costs from €100, with the certificate and call-out included. Heat supply in Bolderāja: a zone of its own
In the Bolderāja heat supply zone, heat is produced by the Rīgas siltums gas boiler houses on Gobas iela and Keramikas iela, and the buildings in this zone are mostly residential. This heat supply zone is not connected to the neighbouring Daugavgrīva zone. So a flat in the housing estate usually does not need a chimney sweep for its heating: the heat comes through pipes, and the smoke is produced at the boiler house.
In a housing estate the safety of your flat depends on ventilation. The kitchen and bathroom ducts run up to the roof, and if they become blocked, moisture stays in the flat and the combustion products of the gas cooker cannot escape. If the duct is shared with neighbours, renovation in one flat can affect the draught in the whole riser.

Ventilation ducts in a housing estate building
In an apartment building natural ventilation ducts are cleaned and checked at least once every 10 years. If the kitchen has a gas cooker or the flat has a gas water heater, the duct in that room must be checked at least once every five years. The owners of the building are responsible for the shared ventilation, or the manager if this is written into the management contract.
- Measurement in the flats The airflow is measured at the grilles, and the ducts with weak draught are noted.
- Cleaning from the roof The ducts are cleaned through the roof outlets with a brush and weight, and nests and debris are removed.
- Camera If a duct still does not draw, it is inspected with a camera to find a blockage or a bricked-up section.
- Certificate The certificate records the condition of the ducts, and the building manager keeps it with the building documents.

Gas appliances in a flat
In flats in apartment buildings Gaso carries out a periodic check of the gas system once every five years, but does not service or replace appliances. If you want to replace a gas water heater or boiler in a flat, the application to the Riga municipality needs a certificate of the technical condition of the existing appliance, the flue and the natural ventilation ducts. Old Bolderāja: low-rise houses with stoves
Outside the housing estates, Bolderāja has historic low-rise buildings and detached houses. They have their own heating: masonry stoves, wood-burning cookers, boilers. A masonry stove flue is cleaned by 1 November, while a boiler or metal stove flue is cleaned a second time, by 1 March. If the house has several flats, a certificate is needed after every cleaning; the owner of a detached house may clean their own solid fuel flue themselves.
Bolderāja lies between the Daugava, the Buļļupe and low-lying coastal land, so the chimney head above the roof has to withstand damp and wind. During cleaning the specialist inspects the brick joints above the roof, the crown slab and the cap. If the head is crumbling, it can be rebuilt: chimney head rebuilding. Port and industrial businesses
Bolderāja has port, industrial and warehouse areas. A company boiler room or workshop stove needs a certificate after every cleaning, and from 01.01.2027 the law will require the service to be provided by a person with appropriate professional training and under a written contract.
