Existing houses: what to clean and when

A detached house in Bukulti has its own heating, and there are often two or three flues: for a boiler, a fireplace or stove, and a sauna. Boiler, metal stove and sauna stove flues are cleaned by 1 November and again by 1 March, because these appliances store heat for less than three hours. A new house: which chimney to choose

A condensing gas boiler needs an acid-resistant flue, often coaxial through the wall or roof. A pellet boiler needs a flue that withstands both high temperatures and condensation. Building code LBN 231-15 requires the chimney to be at least 0.5 m above the roof covering and sets the height depending on the distance to the ridge. The same code (point 54) requires combustible structures to be at least 300 mm from the outer surface of the flue, and each stove needs its own flue channel. Approving the heating type for a new build

In Riga even the first choice of heating type in a new house needs the approval of the municipal Heat Supply Commission, and its decision is valid for five years. The commission assesses which solution is allowed in your zone. From 1 January 2031 new individual appliances using fossil fuel, gas boilers included, may no longer be installed anywhere in Riga. After installation the appliance must be registered with the Riga Energy Agency. So it is better to choose the chimney and flue once the heating type has been approved.

What installation costs

We do not give a figure for installation here, because it would be a guess. The price depends on the height and diameter of the chimney, the material, how many floors and ceilings the flue passes through, access to the roof and whether a sauna or fireplace flue is needed at the same time. A holiday home and an appliance left unused for a long time

Bukulti also has recreation spots, and if you live in the house only during the season, there are two things to know. A gas boiler that has stood unused for more than six months needs an extra flue and ventilation inspection with a certificate before it is switched on. In a solid fuel stove that has stood for a long time the channel often has birds' nests, cobwebs and fallen mortar, so it should be cleaned before the first firing.
