The neighbourhoods portal describes Šampēteris as a strongly industrial area with separate clusters of residential buildings. The history page mentions private houses with gardens, early 20th-century wooden houses and a few apartment blocks. The neighbourhood lies in Pārdaugava towards the airport by the big main roads, and the residential streets alternate with office, warehouse and retail buildings.

In an old wooden house: stove, cooker and brick chimney

In a hundred-year-old wooden house the chimney is usually brick, runs through wooden floors and the attic, and serves a masonry stove or a wood-burning cooker. We clean from the roof and through the stove's cleaning doors, and in the attic we check three things: whether the chimney has cracks, whether the joints have crumbled and whether the wooden beams and boards are at least 300 mm from the flue. If any of them is not in order, we record it in the certificate.

A solid-fuel flue must be cleaned by 1 November, and once every five years a technical condition inspection with photos or video is needed. Šampēteris and heating zone II

On the Riga zoning map for the choice of heating type, the strip around Šampēteris and Bieriņi is, in our reading of the map, coloured as zone II. This is not an official statement about a specific address, so check your address on the map. If the house is in zone II, binding regulations No. RD-24-260-sn ban installing new solid-fuel appliances, wood-burning ones included.

An existing stove or boiler in a private house may still be replaced with a new ecodesign appliance of up to 50 kW, if the type of fuel does not change. So an old wood boiler can be replaced with a new wood boiler, but gas heating may not be swapped for wood. Before installing a new fireplace or stove, ask the municipal Heat Supply Commission. The appliance must be registered with the Riga Energy Agency.

Registration also applies to old appliances. Appliances first used before 31.05.2024 had to be registered with the Riga Energy Agency by 30.06.2024, and newer ones must be registered within a month. If your stove or boiler is not registered yet, contact the agency. The agency may also ask for data on the regular inspections, so keep the cleaning and technical condition certificates.

A newer private house: boiler flue and liner

In private houses with gardens the heating is more often a gas, pellet or wood boiler. The brick flue of a gas boiler must be cleaned once a year, a liner or metal flue once every two years. A pellet or wood boiler is a long-burn appliance, so it needs two cleanings: by 1 November and once more by 1 March.

If the boiler is connected to an old masonry channel, a liner is often needed, because boiler flue gases are cooler and the masonry gets soaked. Offices, warehouses and hotels

Šampēteris has offices, warehouses, retail and hospitality premises. If a building has its own boiler room, a fireplace in a restaurant or a backup boiler, it needs a certificate for each flue in the company's name and, from 1 January 2027, also a written contract with the service provider.
