Private housing areas: a boiler in every house

Although heating networks are available in most of Dārzciems, houses in the private housing areas often have their own heating. Such a house often has a gas boiler in an old brick chimney, a wood or pellet boiler in the basement and a fireplace in the living room. A gas boiler and an old brick chimney

Flue gases from a modern gas boiler are cool and moist. In a wide brick channel they cool further, the water vapour condenses, and over the years the acidic condensate dissolves the mortar. The signs are damp or brown patches on the chimney in the attic, crumbled mortar at the head and ice on the chimney head in winter. The right solution is usually a stainless steel liner with a condensate drain at the bottom.

Before lining, the channel is cleaned and checked with a camera to see whether it is straight and what diameter of liner will fit. Series 103 and 119 buildings: ventilation

In a series-built multi-storey building flats usually have no flue of their own, but they have natural ventilation ducts running from the kitchen and bathroom to the roof. These must be cleaned and checked once every 10 years; if the room has a gas cooker or gas water heater, once every five years. The owners or the manager are responsible for shared ventilation, so the inspection is usually ordered by the building manager for the whole building.

One of the most common problems is a kitchen cooker hood with a fan connected to a natural ventilation duct. It pushes air into the duct and can disrupt the draught in neighbouring flats. Replacing a boiler in a private house in Riga

Riga rules allow an existing boiler in a private house to be replaced with a new ecodesign boiler of up to 50 kW using the same fuel, and the new boiler must be registered with the Riga Energy Agency. If you plan to change the fuel, for example from wood to gas or a heat pump, you need the approval of the municipal commission, and the zone of your address determines what is allowed.
