In such a house the chimney was often not built for winter use, so before the heating season it is worth not only cleaning it but also checking how the flue passes through the wooden structures. Cleaning with a certificate costs from €100, and the call-out in Riga is included in the price. In the form, give the address and what you heat with.

From summer house to home: what it means for the chimney

The Riga neighbourhoods portal writes that the wooden summer houses of Dārziņi were gradually fitted with heating systems, and detached housing and allotment garden areas cover almost half of the neighbourhood (44.9%). In practice this means one house may have a stove from its summer house days and a boiler added later, each connected to its own or a shared flue.

A chimney built for a summer house often has thin walls, a cleaning door in an awkward place or none at all, and where it passes through a wooden ceiling it runs closer to combustible structures than the regulations allow. The fire safety regulations (Cabinet Regulation No. 238, point 64) require at least 380 mm from the inner surface of the flue to a combustible structure if the stove is fired for up to three hours, and 510 mm if longer. VUGD explains that there is no exception for old buildings.

These distances are checked during the technical condition inspection, and any non-compliance is recorded in the notes of the certificate. We quote repairs separately, and the repair is done only if you agree.

What is cleaned in a Dārziņi private house and how often

  • A masonry stove or tiled stove that holds heat for a long time: once a year, by 1 November.
  • A wood boiler, metal stove, sauna stove: by 1 November and once more between 1 November and 1 March, because these appliances do not store heat for long.
  • A gas boiler: the flue is checked and cleaned once a year if it is brick, or once every two years if it is lined or metal.
  • Any solid fuel flue: a technical condition inspection once every five years with a certificate on the set form.

If the house stood empty in summer, the first firing in autumn carries its own risk: the chimney may contain a bird's nest, fallen pieces of brick or moisture deposits. Before the first firing it is advisable to check the draught and whether the channel is clear along its whole length.

Damp by the reservoir and metal flues

Dārziņi lies by the Daugava and the Riga HPP reservoir, and part of the area is lower-lying. This does not mean every house has a damp problem, but in a chimney that has not been heated all summer, moisture soaks into the masonry more easily. In autumn this can show as poor draught in the first days or dark patches on the chimney in the attic.

In many adapted summer houses an uninsulated metal flue has been fitted for the boiler through the wall or roof. If condensation or tar builds up in it, the cause is often a pipe that is too cold, not the fuel. Then chimney insulation or an insulated liner helps; there is a separate page on condensation in the chimney.

Changing the heating in Dārziņi and the Riga rules

Riga binding regulations on heat supply divide the city into three zones. According to the 2025 zoning map, Dārziņi is in zone III, where for new heating priority goes to zero-emission solutions or district heating, then solid biomass, then gas. Check the exact zone for your address in the GeoRiga layer.

If you replace an old wood stove or boiler with a new one using the same fuel, an ecodesign-compliant appliance of up to 50 kW may be installed in all zones. The appliance must be registered with the Riga Energy Agency. Before the new appliance is used, you need a certificate on whether it may be connected to the existing flue: chimney sweep's condition report.

Frequently asked questions

Our summer house has only a small wood stove. Do I need a chimney sweep?

If the house is a detached house and you burn wood, the regulations allow you to clean the flue yourself, and then no certificate is needed. It is worth calling in a chimney sweep if the firebox smokes, if you are not sure about the distance to the wooden ceiling or if you need proof for the insurer that the chimney has been cleaned.

We rebuilt our summer house and want to install a pellet boiler. Will the old chimney do?

Only an inspection can tell. A pellet boiler needs a suitable cross-section and a channel that withstands condensation. A stainless steel liner is often fitted in the old chimney. Before the new boiler is used, you need a certificate on whether it may be connected to the flue.

Do you come out to the far edges of Dārziņi by the reservoir?

Yes, Dārziņi is part of Riga, and the call-out is included in the price. In the form, give the exact address and, if the house is in a gardening cooperative, how to get to the gate.
