1960s apartment blocks: ventilation and gas

In an apartment building natural ventilation ducts are cleaned and inspected at least once every 10 years, and in rooms with a gas cooker or gas water heater at least once every five years. In a building put up sixty years ago some ducts may have been altered during flat renovations, and in the certificate we note for each flat whether the duct works.

If a flat has a gas water heater with a flue, it is inspected once a year if it is brick, and once every two years if lined or metal. When a gas appliance in a flat is replaced, the Riga rules require a certificate on the technical condition of the appliance, flues and natural ventilation ducts. The private house district

Private houses in Ziepniekkalns may have gas boilers, wood and pellet boilers, fireplaces and saunas, sometimes several appliances in one house. Boiler flues are cleaned twice a season, by 1 November and once more by 1 March, a masonry stove once a year. A gas boiler must be serviced every year, and its flue must be inspected too.

When an old gas boiler is replaced with a condensing boiler, the old brick channel is usually not suitable, because condensate damages it. The Riga rules for changing private house heating

Riga is divided into three heating zones, and for private houses in Ziepniekkalns the zone must be checked on the zoning map on the page of the municipal Heat Supply Commission. In zone I neither new solid-fuel nor new gas appliances are allowed, while in zone II new solid-fuel appliances are not allowed. In all zones an existing appliance may be replaced with a new ecodesign appliance of up to 50 kW using the same fuel. Every new appliance is registered with the Riga Energy Agency.

Production sites and warehouses

On the industrial and commercial edge of Ziepniekkalns there are warehouses, production and retail sites. A business building needs a certificate for every cleaning, and solid-fuel boilers need a technical condition inspection with photos or video once every five years. The main roads are Vienības gatve, Ziepniekkalna iela and the Southern Bridge (Dienvidu tilts) connections. The apartment block quarters have large inner courtyards, and the walk from the car park to the right stairwell can be long.
