What is on the roofs in Dreiliņi
The neighbourhoods portal says that construction of series 602 nine-storey buildings in Dreiliņi began in 1990, and new blocks of flats are now going up beside them. Only about 14.9 ha of the neighbourhood is set aside for private housing. The rest is made up of large shops, warehouses and undeveloped land by Lubānas iela and Biķernieku iela.
So in Dreiliņi people most often ask about ventilation ducts rather than a stove chimney: whether they draw, when they were last cleaned and whether the building manager has a certificate. Flue work comes up in private houses and buildings with their own boiler.
Ventilation in nine-storey buildings: deadlines and how the work goes
In a nine-storey building natural ventilation ducts must be cleaned and checked at least once every 10 years. If a flat has a gas cooker or gas water heater, the duct in that room is due once every five years. A certificate is drawn up for every cleaning, and in an apartment building there are no exceptions.
- List of ducts First a list is made of which ducts run from the kitchens and bathrooms on each floor and which are shared.
- Roof In a nine-storey building the duct tops are usually reached through the roof hatch.
- Measurement and camera The draught is checked at the grilles in the flats. If a duct does not draw, a camera is used to look for a blockage or a spot where the duct was once rebuilt.

New projects: mechanical ventilation and gas boilers
Some new builds have mechanical ventilation, for example with a heat recovery unit. The regulations give it its own deadline: checking and cleaning once every five years, with photos or video attached to the certificate. If the building also has natural ventilation ducts, they keep their own deadline.
If a new building has gas boilers in the flats or in a rooftop boiler room, their flues are metal or ceramic systems that are checked and cleaned once every two years. Private houses in Dreiliņi: from a new chimney to a certificate
In the private housing areas of Dreiliņi some houses are new, with modular stainless steel or ceramic chimneys. Before the house is accepted into use, a technical condition inspection of the flue is usually ordered, with photos or video attached to the inspection certificate. In new builds the most common notes are about the height above the roof, access to the cleaning door and the distance to wooden structures. More: flue inspection for building acceptance.
In houses with a wood or pellet boiler the flue is cleaned by 1 November and again in winter, between 1 November and 1 March. A fireplace with masonry mass usually needs cleaning only once a year. If you plan to replace the boiler, Riga rules allow an old appliance to be replaced with a new ecodesign appliance of up to 50 kW using the same fuel; check the zone for your address on the GeoRiga map.

Warehouses and shops with their own heating
If a warehouse, workshop or shop in Dreiliņi has its own boiler or air heater with a flue, the same deadlines apply as for a house, except that a certificate is always needed. More on the page chimney sweep for businesses.
Large retail and warehouse buildings may have district heating or their own boiler room. If the building has its own boiler, the flue is long and tall, so a lift may be needed to reach the roof; state this in the request. The certificate is kept in the company's fire safety documents.
